Generally, direct prequels aren't great. They lack any surprise and they're full of fan-service references that mean next to nothing to the casual viewer. Rogue One suffers heavily with this problem. Great cast, great writing, great film. Loved that the story was the most important thing in the entire film. It was never dramatic for drama’s sake. It had a consistent feel to it. Beautifully shot with a slightly faded grade and lots of soft colours helped handle a sensitive topic well. The score was a great accompaniment and never intrusive. Incredibly fun film. Really reminded me of The Man Who Knew Too Little and Forrest Gump. The idea of a likeable character getting caught up in a bizarre adventure and smiling the whole time is a concept that never seems to get old, just like the protagonist in this film. The first part of Mockingjay had no pay off, no real climax. The second part has almost no emotional depth. The characters we see die have no real effect on us because we’ve seen them for about ten minutes during this outing.
