Whereas I felt Finding Nemo was a remarkable animation both in terms of its visual aesthetic and its storytelling, Finding Dory doesn't add anything new to the Disney/Pixar Canon. The story hits the same beats as the original film, relying on a lot of references and throwbacks to keep everything overly familiar for fans but by doing this it cheapens itself and Finding Nemo. But there's enough here to be entertained. The cast is as wonderful as ever (Kaitlin Olson and Ty Burrell stealing the show as the whales) and there are plenty of laughs to be had. It's a fine enough film but what was the point other than to make millions of dollars? I suppose that's point enough but I guess my point is that it could have made millions of dollars and still been a more relevant film.
